I have the opportunity to finally have a field experience with the college of education with an ESL student. I'm really looking forward to start working with my student and teachers!
The school we're working with is the Coulter Alexander Latimer school district. This is an A school, so it's smaller than I'm used to! (And I thought my school was small when I graduated with 90!) But the ESL teacher there told us she works with 40 students. That is such a large number in this tiny district!
I was placed with a Kindergarten boy. The youngest I've worked with is third grade, so this will be a good experience for me. But this is incredibly nerve racking for me! I've never pictured myself working with students this young, and I really have no experience in it. I wrote some interview-like questions before I left, but had to scratch those as I knew someone that young really wouldn't know how to answer.
I did learn a lot about my student and the classroom though. The teacher told me he struggles with sight words and sequencing. I'm not sure how we'll work on sight words, but I would really like to use picture books to work on sequencing. I think the book "Flotsam," by David Wiesner will be a great place to start.
I plan to continue writing about my experience in preparing for the week long immersion (March 26-30!) and during my time actually there. Let's see if that actually happens now . . .
